Senior year is a strange and specific kind of time. You're still in high school, still tied to the rhythms and relationships of a place you've known for four years, but you can feel yourself already starting to leave. Your senior portraits sit exactly at that threshold — they're the last real documentation of who you are before everything changes. They belong on walls and in wallets and in the family photo albums that survive every move and decade that follows.
I photograph seniors across the South Shore every spring and fall, and the session works best when the preparation starts early.
Photography Shark is based in Rockland, MA — a short drive from Hingham — and we work with Hingham High School seniors every year to produce portraits that actually capture something real, not just a staged smile in front of a backdrop. Class-of-yearbook senior sessions at Photography Shark start at $1,500.
What Makes a Great Senior Portrait
The gap between a great senior portrait and a generic one isn't the location or the backdrop — it's whether the image captures the actual person. And that comes from direction.
Most high school seniors have limited experience being photographed intentionally. The result, without guidance, is a stiff posture, a self-conscious expression, and a photo that looks like someone being photographed rather than someone being themselves. A skilled photographer closes that gap through the session itself — through conversation, through movement, through the specific kind of direction that helps people relax and stop thinking about the camera.
At Photography Shark, Chris McCarthy has spent over a decade photographing people across the South Shore and knows how to work with teenagers who range from genuinely comfortable in front of a camera to absolutely dreading the whole experience. The approach adapts to the person. The goal is always the same: get to something real.
Hingham Locations That Work for Senior Portraits
Hingham is one of the more photographically rich towns on the South Shore. The combination of coastal access, historic architecture, open parkland, and well-maintained town commons gives seniors a wide range of options for their session backdrop.
World's End
This Trustees of Reservations property is probably the single best senior portrait location on the South Shore. The tree-lined carriage roads, elevated hilltop views, Hingham Harbor in the background, and open meadow sections offer enormous variety within a single location. The light through the tree canopy in late afternoon is particularly good, and the walking paths mean the session feels active rather than staged.
World's End works for almost any style — natural and relaxed, more dramatic and editorial, or anything in between. It's also far enough from the center of town that you can shoot without navigating crowds.
Hingham Harbor
The harbor area — particularly the spots around the town pier and along the waterfront — offers a coastal character that's distinctly South Shore. For seniors who grew up sailing, boating, or just spending summers around the water, it's a personally meaningful location. The mix of docked boats, weathered wood, and open water makes for strong backgrounds that don't compete with the subject.
Early evening light over the harbor is exceptional from late May through October.
Downtown Hingham / Main Street
The historic commercial district along North Street and South Street offers a different character — brick storefronts, wide sidewalks, mature trees, and an old-town aesthetic that photographs well. For seniors who want something more urban-feeling without leaving Hingham, this area works well for a portion of the session.
Bare Cove Park
For something less manicured and more natural, Bare Cove Park offers wooded trails, a tidal estuary, and open meadows. The variety within the park is significant, and the natural textures — trees, water, tall grass — make for compelling environmental portraits.
The Photography Shark Studio in Rockland
Some seniors want studio portraits alongside their outdoor work — clean backgrounds, professional lighting, a more formal look that translates well to yearbook photos and family print orders. Our Rockland studio is set up for exactly this and is a short drive from Hingham.
Planning Your Senior Portrait Session
When to Schedule
Senior portraits for Hingham High School students typically happen over the summer before senior year or in early fall. This timing gives you the full flexibility of summer availability, good weather, and daylight without the pressure of the academic year.
August and September offer some of the best light conditions of the year. The sun angle in late summer is lower than in June, which means more usable hours of good light and softer shadows during the middle of the day. September in particular is often perfect — warm temperatures, clear skies, and foliage just beginning to turn.
If you're on the fall schedule for yearbook photos, coordinate your portrait session to happen before your school's submission deadline.
How Many Looks to Plan
For most senior sessions, three to four distinct looks is a realistic and productive range. This might mean:
- A more formal look in dress clothes (blazer, nice top) for the yearbook and family print
- A casual look in something you actually wear — a favorite jacket, a meaningful shirt
- A sport or activity look if you're a varsity athlete or have a specific identity tied to an extracurricular
- An outdoor or environmental look that incorporates a location specific to your senior year
Each look change takes a few minutes, and the session is structured to allow for natural transitions rather than rushed outfit swaps.
What to Wear
The single most common mistake in senior portrait wardrobe is wearing something you think you "should" wear rather than something you actually feel confident in. If you're never comfortable in formal clothes and you show up in a blazer you've worn twice, it shows.
Think about what you wear when you feel most like yourself. Start there. Then add one more formal option for the yearbook photo if your school requires it. Bring a few choices — at least two tops, one layering piece — so you have room to adjust based on what's working in the session.
Solid colors are simpler to work with than bold patterns, but there are no rigid rules. If you have a meaningful piece of clothing — a letterman jacket, a team jersey, something connected to who you are as a senior — bring it.
Involving Family
Senior portraits are primarily for you, but they're also for your family. If parents or siblings want to be included in a few frames, we can work that in. Some families make the session into a small event, and that relaxed energy often produces the warmest images of the day.
If you want strictly individual shots, that works too. The session is built around what's meaningful for you.
Studio Portraits for Yearbook and Print
Photography Shark's Rockland studio provides the controlled conditions for yearbook-style portraits and the kind of formal prints that go in frames and get ordered by grandparents. Professional softbox lighting, a range of backdrop options, and full-frame Sony camera systems produce sharp, color-accurate images that hold up at large print sizes.
If your school requires a specific format for yearbook submissions — particular crop, background color, image file specifications — let us know in advance and we'll shoot to meet those requirements.
After the Session: What You'll Receive
Delivery Timeline
Edited images are typically delivered within two to three weeks of the session. During summer and early fall — the peak season for senior portraits — we'll confirm the specific timeline when you book.
What's Included
Sessions include multiple fully edited final images in both high-resolution format (suitable for print orders at any size) and web-optimized versions ready for sharing, downloading to social media, and uploading to yearbook platforms.
Retouching is included for all finals — color correction, skin tone balancing, and standard blemish removal. The goal is images that look clean and professional without looking airbrushed.
Print and Album Orders
Physical prints, canvas wraps, and photo books can be ordered through Photography Shark after your session. If you're thinking about print orders for family gifts, let us know early — some formats have longer production lead times during the busy fall season.
Serving Hingham and South Shore Seniors
Photography Shark works with seniors from Hingham, Cohasset, Norwell, Scituate, Marshfield, Duxbury, Hanover, Pembroke, Plymouth, Kingston, and the surrounding South Shore communities. The Rockland studio is central enough to serve the full region, and we do outdoor sessions across the South Shore based on location preference.
