Built for Submission Standards
Modeling Headshots Calibrated for Agency Review
Modeling headshots are a specific format with specific requirements. They are noteditorial portraits, glamour photography, or general headshots used for LinkedIn or corporate use. Boston agencies, casting directors, and clients reviewing submissions are looking at clean, technically strong images on neutral backgrounds that accurately show what the model actually looks like — not what could be done with dramatic lighting or aggressive retouching.
Every session at Photography Shark is built around that submission standard. Seamless backdrops in white, gray, and black. Lighting calibrated for accurate facial representation, not creative effect. Retouching that handles distractions and skin texture issues but preserves the model's actual appearance. The session is shaped by what the deliverable needs to do: open doors with Boston agencies and pass review on Casting Networks, Actors Access, Model Mayhem, and any other platform you submit through.
For the deeper editorial guide to what Boston modeling agencies actually want in submission headshots— Maggie Inc., Model Club, regional offices — the long-form blog post walks through agency expectations, common submission mistakes, and the specific differences between commercial and editorial register. This page is the booking page. Sessions from $395, in studio, in Rockland.

Session Structure
What Happens at a Modeling Headshot Session
Arrival and wardrobe review (10 min). When you arrive at the Rockland studio we go through the wardrobe you brought, identify the strongest options for each look, and decide the shoot order. Most sessions start with a clean agency submission look and progress to commercial and portfolio variants as the session continues.
Lighting setup for your first look (5 min). Modeling headshots use specific lighting setups depending on the look — clamshell for commercial submission, broader softbox for editorial, more directional for fashion register. We calibrate the lighting against your specific facial structure and the look we're shooting first.
Active shooting and direction (45–60 min for a standard session). Sessions are directed throughout. Posing, expression range, head position, eye direction — whatever you need coached through, you get coached through. Most models, even experienced ones, benefit from direction on micro-adjustments that read clearly in headshots but not in mirror practice.
Wardrobe changes and reset (10–15 min total across the session). Between looks, we change wardrobe, adjust hair if needed, and recalibrate lighting if the new look requires it. Most sessions cover 2–3 distinct looks; extended sessions cover 4–5.
Image review and selection (covered in delivery). Within 3–5 business days, you receive a private online gallery with the full retouched selection. The retouching pass handles skin texture, stray hair, distracting elements in frame, and color-corrected exposure — while preserving accurate appearance.
Which Service Fits Your Goal
Modeling Headshots vs. Model Portfolio — What You Need
Both are studio services, but they answer different submission needs. Most models building a Boston-market presence need headshots first — the portfolio comes after the agency relationship is established.

Who Books This Session
Boston Models Who Book Photography Shark
Aspiring models approaching Boston agencies for the first time. Maggie Inc., Model Club Inc., and the regional offices of larger agencies all accept open submissions, and a strong submission headshot is the single most important asset for getting reviewed. First-approach sessions are typically the standard $395 format — clean, accurate, no portfolio looks needed yet.
Working models updating after a look change. A new hair color, a meaningful weight or fitness change, a different hair length, or just an outdated photo set — any of these is a reason to refresh. Agencies need current accurate imagery, and outdated headshots create problems when the model who shows up doesn't match the photo. A standard $395 session covers the refresh in one sitting.
Models with existing representation needing comp card updates. Whether the agency is requesting a refresh or you're building a new comp card for a specific campaign, the extended session ($795) covers four to five looks suitable for printing on a 5.5×8.5 comp card with matched lighting across all images.
Actors and creatives who also model. Working in both acting and modeling markets means submitting different image types for different roles. Photography Shark can shoot both in a single session if requested — theatrical/commercial actor headshots alongside agency-submission modeling headshots. See the actor headshot service page for the actor-specific framing.
Teens entering the Boston modeling market with parent support. Photography Shark accommodates teen modeling sessions with the parent or guardian present during the session, in line with industry standards for working with minors in modeling photography. Wardrobe and look planning is reviewed with the parent before shooting.
Why Book Here
What Makes Photography Shark Different for Modeling Headshots
Headshot specialist studio, not a generalist. Photography Shark photographs headshots and portraits as the primary service — not as a sideline to weddings, events, or family work. Modeling headshots have specific submission requirements that benefit from a photographer whose entire workflow is calibrated to those requirements.
Lighting calibrated for modeling submission standards specifically. Not the same as glamour photography (too much drama), not the same as corporate LinkedIn headshots (too utility-grade), not the same as actor headshots (different expression direction). Modeling submission imagery has its own register and the studio is set up to deliver it consistently.
Hand-retouched, not batch-processed. Every delivered image is individually retouched by Chris McCarthy. No AI batch filters. No outsourced retouching pipeline. The retouching pass handles skin texture, color accuracy, and stray-hair cleanup while preserving the accurate facial representation that agencies need to see.
Photographed by Chris McCarthy — 10+ years of dedicated portrait and headshot work. 77 five-star Google reviews from clients including actors with active Boston agency representation, models building first portfolios, and working professionals refreshing their submission imagery. FAQ

How much do modeling headshots cost in Boston?
Modeling headshot sessions at Photography Shark start at $395 for a 60–90 minute studio session in Rockland, MA. That includes multiple wardrobe changes, 10 fully retouched high-resolution images, and a commercial-use license covering agency submission, casting platforms, social media, and brand work. Extended sessions with additional looks and 20+ retouched images run $795. Galleries are delivered within 3–5 business days.
How long does a modeling headshot session take?
Standard studio modeling headshot sessions run 60–90 minutes. That includes set-up, lighting calibration, two to three wardrobe changes, and shooting across the look range — typically a clean agency submission headshot, a commercial-feel headshot, and one or two portfolio looks. Extended 2-hour sessions allow for 4+ wardrobe changes and dedicated portfolio coverage alongside submission images.
How quickly do I receive my modeling headshots?
Standard turnaround is 3–5 business days from session to delivered gallery. Rush turnaround (24–48 hour delivery) is available for $300 additional and is popular for models with imminent agency submission deadlines, casting calls, or specific job opportunities. Every delivered image is individually hand-retouched — no batch AI processing.
Are Photography Shark modeling headshots formatted for agency submission?
Yes. All delivered files meet or exceed the technical specifications for Boston modeling agency submissions, casting platforms (Casting Networks, Actors Access, Model Mayhem), and printed comp cards. Files are delivered as full-resolution JPEGs with the appropriate aspect ratios for both digital submission portals and print-quality comp cards. The license covers all submission use without expiration.
Where is the studio for Boston modeling headshot sessions?
The studio is at 83 E Water Street, Rockland, MA 02370 — approximately 25 minutes south of downtown Boston via Route 3, or accessible via the MBTA Plymouth/Kingston commuter rail line. Free on-site parking in a converted mill building. Models from Boston, Cambridge, Quincy, Braintree, Hingham, Marshfield, Plymouth, and throughout the South Shore book here regularly.
What is the difference between modeling headshots and a model portfolio session?
Modeling headshots are clean, accurate face-focused images on a neutral background — the lead image for agency submission and casting platforms. A model portfolio is a broader collection of looks (commercial, editorial, fashion, lifestyle) that demonstrates range across styling and contexts. A single 60–90 minute session at Photography Shark can produce both agency submission headshots and a few portfolio looks. For a dedicated multi-look portfolio build, see the model portfolio page.
Do I need professional hair and makeup for modeling headshots?
Most modeling headshot sessions benefit from on-day hair and makeup styled specifically for studio lighting and headshot photography — not the same as glamour or event makeup. Photography Shark can provide a referral to a makeup artist experienced with headshot work in the Rockland and Boston area. For agency submission headshots specifically, makeup should be natural and minimal — the goal is accurate representation, not transformation.
Can I book modeling headshots for a group or modeling agency roster?
Yes. Studio days for agency rosters or model groups can be arranged — typically structured as a multi-model day with sequential sessions and shared backdrops. Pricing is quoted per group based on number of models, session length per model, and image-delivery scope. Boston-area modeling agencies and model groups have used Photography Shark for matched-style roster updates — contact the studio for a group quote.
