Admissions committees are not evaluating photography. They are attaching a face to a file they will discuss in a room, and meeting that face again at interview. That makes the brief narrow: accurate, current, professional, and consistent with how you will actually turn up. A heavily filtered photo, or one three years and a different haircut old, works against you quietly.

What the photo can do is avoid being the discordant note. Everything else in the file has been worked over for months. A cropped phone snapshot against a kitchen wall reads as the one thing nobody got round to — which, fairly or not, is a signal.

Several programmes publish exact requirements: pixel dimensions, file size ceilings, background colour, sometimes aspect ratio. Send them before the session and they get applied at delivery rather than discovered during an upload. Round 1 — September deadlines. Book in late August or the first week of September. The essays are what slip, and the photo is what gets forgotten behind them. Two weeks of margin means you pick your image instead of settling for whichever one is sharpest at midnight.

Round 2 — early January deadlines. Book in December, before the holidays compress everything. The same squeeze happens, with less working time in it.

Round 3 and rolling admissions. Less clustered, so scheduling is easier — but the standard does not relax, and a late-round file benefits from looking as considered as an early one.

Reapplicants. If you are applying again, the photo should be current rather than the one from last cycle. Committees do sometimes see both.
