MBA & Grad School Application Photos in Boston
The application photo is the one component of a business-school file that takes an hour rather than a month — and the one most often left until the week it is due. It sits beside essays you rewrote nine times. These sessions get it right early: clean, accurate, business-professional, cropped to whatever your programme publishes, and matched to the LinkedIn profile the same people will check. Photographed and hand-retouched by Chris McCarthy in Rockland, MA.

What It Is For
A Photo That Matches the Rest of the Application
Admissions committees are not evaluating photography. They are attaching a face to a file they will discuss in a room, and meeting that face again at interview. That makes the brief narrow: accurate, current, professional, and consistent with how you will actually turn up. A heavily filtered photo, or one three years and a different haircut old, works against you quietly.
What the photo can do is avoid being the discordant note. Everything else in the file has been worked over for months. A cropped phone snapshot against a kitchen wall reads as the one thing nobody got round to — which, fairly or not, is a signal.
Several programmes publish exact requirements: pixel dimensions, file size ceilings, background colour, sometimes aspect ratio. Send them before the session and they get applied at delivery rather than discovered during an upload. For the full walkthrough of the standard and the common mistakes, read the MBA application photo guide.

Timing
Booking Around Round 1 and Round 2
Round 1 — September deadlines. Book in late August or the first week of September. The essays are what slip, and the photo is what gets forgotten behind them. Two weeks of margin means you pick your image instead of settling for whichever one is sharpest at midnight.
Round 2 — early January deadlines. Book in December, before the holidays compress everything. The same squeeze happens, with less working time in it.
Round 3 and rolling admissions. Less clustered, so scheduling is easier — but the standard does not relax, and a late-round file benefits from looking as considered as an early one.
Reapplicants. If you are applying again, the photo should be current rather than the one from last cycle. Committees do sometimes see both.
Already late? Rush 24–48 hour delivery exists for this. Get in touch before booking so the session slot and the rush both land ahead of your deadline.
Who Books This Session
Boston Candidates Who Book Photography Shark
Working professionals applying to Boston-area MBA programmes. Harvard Business School, MIT Sloan, BU Questrom, Babson Olin, BC Carroll, Northeastern D’Amore-McKim — and Tuck and Yale SOM within a drive. Most candidates are applying to several at once, which is exactly why one correctly-shot set that satisfies all of their specifications is worth an hour.
Candidates who also need the LinkedIn photo updated. Admissions staff and recruiters cross-reference. The extended session produces both from one visit, under one lighting setup, so they match.
Law, policy, and public-health applicants. Same brief, same session, different published specifications. Send them ahead.
International candidates applying to US programmes. Where a file is competing against unfamiliar credentials, presentation carries more weight, not less.
Admitted students needing a directory photo. Once you are in, the programme wants one for the class profile and the internal directory. The same session covers it.
FAQ
Boston MBA Application Photo Questions
How much does an MBA application photo cost in Boston?
An application photo session at Photography Shark starts at $395 for a 30-minute studio session in Rockland, MA. That includes a neutral background, attire guidance, 10 fully retouched high-resolution images cropped to the specifications most programmes publish, and a full-use licence so the same photo can serve the application, LinkedIn, and the programme directory. An extended $595 session adds a second wardrobe look and 20 retouched images. Galleries are delivered within 3-5 business days, with rush available near a round deadline.
What should an MBA application photo look like?
Clean, current, head-and-shoulders, on a plain neutral background, in business-professional attire, with even lighting and a natural, confident expression. Admissions committees are not judging the photograph — they are attaching a face to an application they will discuss in a room, and later meet at interview. So the standard is accuracy and professionalism rather than personality: no heavy filtering, no dramatic lighting, no cropped-from-a-wedding suit jacket. Several programmes publish exact pixel dimensions and file size limits; those get applied at delivery.
When should I book relative to Round 1 and Round 2 deadlines?
Two to three weeks ahead of the round you are targeting. Round 1 deadlines cluster in September, Round 2 in early January, and both are preceded by a squeeze where essays run late and the photo becomes the thing nobody planned for. Standard turnaround here is 3-5 business days, so booking with a fortnight of margin means you choose your image calmly rather than uploading whatever is sharpest at midnight. Rush 24-48 hour delivery exists for when that has already happened.
Does the same photo work for LinkedIn and the programme directory?
It should, and that is worth planning for. Admissions staff and, later, recruiters cross-reference the application against LinkedIn, and a mismatch between the two photos is a small, avoidable friction. The extended session is built for exactly this: a business-professional look for the application plus a slightly warmer second look for LinkedIn, shot under the same lighting so the set reads as one person on a consistent day rather than two different presentations.
Do you photograph law school, med school, and other graduate applications?
Yes — the brief is essentially identical across programmes, and the session format is the same. Medical residency applicants have their own page because ERAS has specific conventions around the white coat and its own submission calendar; see the ERAS page for that. Law, policy, public health, and general graduate applications are all served here, and specialist programmes occasionally publish unusual dimensions, which is why it is worth sending the requirements before the session rather than after.
Is a professional photo actually required for an MBA application?
Most top programmes require a photograph as part of the application, and several specify dimensions, background, and file format. Whether it must be professionally taken is rarely stated — but the photo sits beside essays and a CV that were worked on for months, and a cropped phone snapshot against a kitchen wall is a discordant note in an otherwise careful application. The cost of getting it right is small relative to everything else in the file.
Where is the studio, and is it convenient for Boston business schools?
The studio is at 83 E Water Street, Rockland, MA 02370 — about 25 minutes south of downtown Boston via Route 3, with free on-site parking. It is a straightforward trip from the Boston-area programmes including Harvard Business School, MIT Sloan, BU Questrom, Babson Olin, Boston College Carroll, and Northeastern D’Amore-McKim, as well as for working candidates applying from across the South Shore. The Plymouth/Kingston MBTA commuter rail line also serves the area.
